Faculty are formal and informal campus leaders. The Center for Faculty Success provides resources and support for department chairs, links to leadership training at Rutgers, and information about the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Leadership Fellowship opportunities.

Leadership Training Opportunities
Academic Leadership

ALP is a year-long extensive leadership development program. The program is comprised of one virtual orientation session, 3 three-day campus-based seminars on a Big Ten campus, and five at-Rutgers debrief learning sessions. The in-person seminars are rotated among the Big Ten Academic Alliance universities. ALP Fellows also participate in on-campus activities throughout the academic year.
Who should apply: Faculty members currently in formal academic leadership positions or those planning to advance to leadership positions in the near term.
Materials: Candidate CV, candidate letter of interest (no more than 500 words), statement of support from Dean (no more than 300 words). Applications for this program are announced and due during spring semester.

The Department Leaders Program consists of a combination of in-person and virtual workshops for department chairs (or those in equivalent roles) across Rutgers–New Brunswick. Additionally, networking opportunities are made available throughout the year for department leaders, including the New Chair’s Orientation at the start of each academic year sponsored by the Center for Faculty Success and the Office of Organizational Leadership.

The Rutgers Leadership Academy (RLA) is a one-year cohort-based program for mid-career faculty and academic staff from across Rutgers who aspire to broaden their leadership roles.

Inclusive Leadership

The Inclusive Leadership Academy is a cohort-based program designed to to equip academic and administrative leaders to engage in critical self-reflection, foster positive relationships, and work toward institutional transformation within their scope and areas of responsibility.

The HERS Institute is a transformational experience, designed to strengthen and elevate women holding mid-to-senior level positions in higher education. Participants are asked to share their vision of leadership and what they hope to contribute to their respective institutions, and are challenged to actualize this professional vision for themselves. Academic units at Rutgers–New Brunswick may nominate participants for this program each year.

OASIS Leadership and Professional Development – The OASIS Leadership and Professional Development program is designed to promote inclusive community, combat isolation, and mitigate against bias that can negatively shape the experiences of women faculty who may often face unique needs and challenges as they navigate higher ranks and leadership in academia.
